ON THE HEELS OF BEST-SELLING REISSUE CD SOUL VETERAN CANDI STATON RELEASES FIRST SOUL CD IN 24 YEARS

Triple A Radio Styled Soul CD “His Hands” Releases April 4, 2006 On Honest Jons/Astralwerks/EMI Records

The Atlanta-based Sweetheart of Soul, Candi Staton’s self-titled 2004 Honest Jons reissue of her 1969-1973 Muscle Shoals recordings was a surprise worldwide hit. It hit the pop charts in England, France, the Netherlands and Japan. In a genre that considers 5,000 in sales a respectable hit, Staton’s project sold over 100,000 copies. Impressed by the sales, EMI/Honest Jons then commissioned Staton, who had spent the previous two decades in the gospel field, to come back into the secular fold with a new project.

“We decided to capitalize on that momentum,” says Mark Ainley, who runs the Honest Jons label in London, “By recording a new album of southern soul on Candi that will have a decidedly darker feel than her past works.” Produced by Lambchop sideman, Mark Nevers, the resulting His Hands, has already received widespread praise (The London Telegraph called it, “a stunning return and a hard-won triumph.”) from the press in Europe where the CD officially releases this week as Staton continues on a sold-out ten-city concert tour of the continent.

“I hadn’t done that type of music in so long,” says Staton. “I just closed my eyes and began to get off into it. I missed it, I honestly did. I missed singing those love songs, because my life doesn’t just consist of the church.”

The project releases in the USA on Tuesday, April 4, 2006 on Astralwerks Records. Aside from four compositions by Staton, the collection features two other originals (one by Will Oldham) and Staton’s own unique covers of songs associated with Merle Haggard, Bobby “Blue” Bland, Dolly Parton, Charlie Rich and Solomon Burke. Her band has the highest pedigree. Chip Young (Elvis, Willie Nelson) on acoustic guitar, Barry Beckett (Aretha, Bob Dylan) on organ, Upright bass player Dennis Crouch (June Carter Cash) and various members of Nashville’s hybrid band, Lambchop.

Everyone needs a Hero!

(Founder of GospelBlogger.com - Larry W. Robinson, Gospel Mega-star - Kirk Franklin and KZWA Promotions Director - Tara the Harley Diva)

Recently GospelBlogger.com got an opportunity to attend the Southwest Kirk Franklin & Mary Mary HERO tour in Beaumont, TX. During the intermission we were able to interview Mary Mary. The young, anointed and energetic ladies were very cordial and allowed us to ask several series of questions. (Visit www.gospelupdate.com for the live audio interview!) After the concert we were able to briefly speak with Kirk Franklin. We arrived at the concert late because of heavy traffic, so we missed our interview time with Kirk. But Kirk still made time to pose for pictures, sign autographs and answer a few interview questions. The concert was truly next level. It featured great stage lighting effects, an awesome sound system, powerful testimonies, beautiful music, and most of all - life-changing ministry. There was even a cameo appearance from Teddy Campbell, one of the lead singers of The Soul Seekers. When the Hero tours comes to a city near you…go, because, “Everyone needs a Hero and so do you!”

A host of publications, including Billboard and Mojo magazine, agree that Uncloudy Days: The Gospel Music Encyclopedia (Backbeat Books) is a long overdue reference book for fans of gospel music. In fact, a Record Collector magazine scribe wrote that, “As far as gospel reference books go, this is undoubtedly the Bible.”

The first laymen’s encyclopedia devoted to black gospel music, the book profiles over 650 artists dating back to 1900. The entries highlight their ups and downs and cover every genre of black gospel from blues and rap to southern gospel. The artists range from Mahalia Jackson to Kirk Franklin and all in between. The book also contains trivia, winners of various gospel awards and a listing of million-selling gospel recordings.

The fourteen track “Uncloudy Days” companion CD (Artemis Gospel) features dynamic songs by gospel icons such as Mavis Staples, the Blind Boys of Alabama and Bryan Wilson among others. The author’s talk will be followed by an intimate evening concert, “Two Sisters in Gospel,” starring gospel legends Myrna Summers and Sara Jordan Powell. The two music legends will perform Friday, April 7th and Saturday, April 8th at * p.m. each night at the Clarence Muse Café Theater. Ticket cost is $15. TBAAL Box office is (214) 743-2400. Don't Trip ... He Ain't Through with Me Yet!

In Don't Trip ... He Ain't Through with Me Yet, Harvey continues to relate his unique views on church, children, African-American culture and families. The faith-based community has enjoyed Harvey's spin on "church life" since he began participating in MegaFest over three years ago. Harvey retains his "keep it real" attitude while delivering hysterical insights on everyday situations.

Host a Bone Marrow Drive at your church!

How do you tell a child they may not live long enough to kiss a girl (yuck), or tell a girl won't grow up to get married...Leukemia victims in your family and community have life sentences if a bone marrow donor match is not found. There is a pressing need for Black and African-American to take a simple blood test donations to make a difference in someone's life while your alive.

Host a Bone Marrow Drive In Your Area:
Anyone can hold a marrow drive! Businesses, sororities, fraternities, individuals, families, and organizations! They are all welcome to join the National Registry!

Where can a drive be held?
A marrow drive can be held anywhere at almost anytime! We are available seven days a week. Marrow drives can be held at national conferences, fairs, companies, colleges, and churches. When speaking to the recruiter, know the location, time, date and the type of event.

What happens at a bone marrow drive?
The object of a bone marrow drive is to test people's tissue, so they can be listed on the National Marrow Donor Program Registry. The process takes about 20 minutes per donor and is virtually painless. Each person is asked to fill out a medical history questionnaire. If they meet the necessary qualifications, a quick blood sample is taken from their arm or finger. It's then sent to a laboratory and the bone marrow type is entered into the national registry.

What Are the Chances of Finding a Match?
The odds vary widely. Approximately 80 percent of all patients do identify a potential match on their preliminary search. This number has improved significantly over the past few years, because of the overall recruitment efforts and increased racial and ethnic diversity on the Registry. Bear in mind, however, that not all of the 80 percent of patients who identify an identical donor at the preliminary search will necessarily go on to transplant. Similarly, some of the 20 percent who do not immediately have a match may subsequently identify one or be transplanted with a less or partial match.

Who do I contact if I want to Host a drive?
If you would like to hold a marrow drive in your area, please contact a Specialist at the Greek Gray Leukemia Foundation.
