Prelude to Concert Starring Myrna Summers & Sara Jordan Powell
Former People magazine writer, Bil Carpenter, will speak about the history of gospel music and sign copies of his new book “Uncloudy Days: The Gospel Music Encyclopedia” at the Clarence Muse Café Theater in the Black Academy of Arts & Letters (TBAAL complex on Saturday, April 8, 2006 @ 2:00 p.m. Admission is free.
A host of publications, including Billboard and Mojo magazine, agree that Uncloudy Days: The Gospel Music Encyclopedia (Backbeat Books) is a long overdue reference book for fans of gospel music. In fact, a Record Collector magazine scribe wrote that, “As far as gospel reference books go, this is undoubtedly the Bible.”
The first laymen’s encyclopedia devoted to black gospel music, the book profiles over 650 artists dating back to 1900. The entries highlight their ups and downs and cover every genre of black gospel from blues and rap to southern gospel. The artists range from Mahalia Jackson to Kirk Franklin and all in between. The book also contains trivia, winners of various gospel awards and a listing of million-selling gospel recordings.
The fourteen track “Uncloudy Days” companion CD (Artemis Gospel) features dynamic songs by gospel icons such as Mavis Staples, the Blind Boys of Alabama and Bryan Wilson among others. The author’s talk will be followed by an intimate evening concert, “Two Sisters in Gospel,” starring gospel legends Myrna Summers and Sara Jordan Powell. The two music legends will perform Friday, April 7th and Saturday, April 8th at * p.m. each night at the Clarence Muse Café Theater. Ticket cost is $15. TBAAL Box office is (214) 743-2400. Theater located at 650 South Griffin, Dallas, TX 75202.
