Shirley Murdock, stars in The Right Hand of Fellowship, Oct.18-20 at the Atlas Theatre in D.C.!

SHIRLEY MURDOCK HEADLINES A SHOWCASE PERFORMANCE OF THE RIGHT HAND OF FELLOWSHIP WRITTEN BY AVIS GRAY, FEATURING DYNAMIC, LOCAL TALENT AND A PROMISING, YOUTHFUL CAST, AT THE ATLAS PERFORMING ARTS CENTER’S SPRENGER THEATRE, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18 – SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2013.

The Right Hand of Fellowship by Avis Gray is a new dramatic work with music that portrays an intergenerational story set in the midst of a heated, present-day “church meeting,” addressing the business of restoring an old church building while exploring conflicts that incur between the elders of the church, the youth of the church, and “outsiders.” The story is masterfully told, enhanced by original, soulful music, lively choreography, and inspiring dramatic performances, and features the incomparable Shirley Murdock – best known for her 1986 R&B hit single, “As We Lay.”

Ms. Murdock, a powerhouse Gospel recording artist, has toured with the inspirational Gospel play, “Be Careful What You Pray For,” with Cuba Gooding, Jr. and David Peaston. Ms. Murdock is cast in The Right Hand of Fellowship’s principle role of Mother Boone, the church Mother determined to stop “any devil” from destroying the aging church she was raised up in since a little girl. A young pastor, Minister Forbes, played by Aaron Snowden, and a growing, youthful congregation become a force Mother Boone must reckon with.

ROLL ON! Productions (ROLL ON!) is pleased to present and produce Playwright Avis Gray's first stage production of The Right Hand of Fellowship. Ms. Gray is well known in the arts community in Winston Salem, NC and has been a professor of English and drama at Winston Salem State University for many years.

Artistic Director and Founder of ROLL ON!, Marshall Opie, states, “I am excited about the opportunity to direct and produce this wonderful and powerful play that expresses what the African-American church experience can be for so many and once was for me before changing my present-day church membership. This play boldly says what people might want to say but are often afraid to say, and says it so eloquently without the use of profanity.”
